Banking vs. Donating
If you decide not to bank your cord blood and save it privately for your own use, you may have an opportunity to donate it. In this event, it would be stored by a non-profit agency and saved for someone else to use, should they need it. In this it is much like donating blood.
While donating your child's cord blood may not help you personally, think of someone else in need if you are given the opportunity. It is an easy gift to give as there is no cost or difficulty on your part.
If you are interested in donating your child's cord blood, your should speak with the Labor and Delivery receptionist at your hospital before the actual delivery date to understand the process and who to contact. If you wait to notify the hospital until the actual birth, it will likely be too late.
